Great! Thanks, LATAM flies from SCL to LAX on a 787 so maybe all I'll have to do is too really short Bay Area to LAX flights and then the long legs to South America and Back.

Sensible, and I would do the same. I'd also credit the LATAM flight to your AA account.
Which brings up another question, which I don't know the answer to and am on my phone: does LATAM offer that SCL-LAX flight as an AA codeshare? Might be beneficial to book the open jaw via AA that way for a couple of reasons. Just a thought.
