First, with latitude you can confirm upgrades right away. So check first is there is upgrade space and if there is, book. In any event, you should always be able to cancel and refund a latitude fare; although it appears lately some latitude fares with a cancellation penalty have shown up. (But even then, you can check in the fare rules and make sure it's not the case.)
Bottom line: with B/Y fares there is no real risk of mot getting an upgrade.
