UK Luxury Tax (APD) and Connections into LHR on Separate Ticket
I came across this interesting tidbit as I was wasting time on the interwebs today:
While the APD is collected when you buy your ticket the airline doesn’t actually remit it until you fly.
- If you wind up not taking the trip, you can claim the tax back from the airline.
- If you travel on a separate ticket to the UK within 24 hours of your UK departure, even if it’s on another airline, you can claim the tax back from the airline you paid it to.

I have a AMS-LHR coming up in October, and I'll only be in the UK for about 16 hours before flying back to the US on a Delta ticket (VS UC). Does anyone have experience with getting the refund? I presume you have to contact Corporate Customer Care with a copy of your other itinerary?

Reason: As UKtravelbear pointed out: APD is not a luxury tax, it's just higher for travel in premium cabins
