Next year Air Canada will announce details of its new Frequent Flier program - and their current reliance on Aeroplan (which they spun off for cash during one of their financial nosedives) will end in 2020. At that point, there might be a good *A alternative right next door, if you do more international than domestic USA flying. I'm certainly keeping an open mind on that possibility.
fingers crossed. I’ve been YYC based for 9 years and about 4 years ago AC’s garbage program drove me into the arms of United and I’ve been a very happy 1K since.
Having said that, AC would offer some positives and to a US west coast based flyer
Positives
Ability to utilize some UA perks such as lounge access, free bags
Airports and lounges are generally better in YYZ/YVR than US alternatives
Can credit from UA if you’re flying domestically
negatives
scheduling and frequency tends to be better from the US than in Canada, almost everywhere you’re trying to go in the world
backtracking / detours to stay on AC metal (I’ve had this issue in reverse with UA, but it’s not so bad)
