Free101girl's got it right -- the airline's liability doesn't change just because the passengers were on the way to a wedding, baptism, bar mitzvah, funeral, what have you. They should have brought the items on-board.
Hopefully, the happy couple will be able to look back on this and just have a good laugh about it.
I guess the reason I decided to post was to really drive home the fact that, when it's a really important event one is traveling to, make your travel arrangements accordingly. Don't be tempted to earn extra segments at times like these -- fly direct, and get to your destination early! Planning an extra day en route to an event such as a wedding will go a long way to keep the stress factor low, and assure that, if something DOES go wrong (cancelled flight, etc.), there's enough time to remedy it AND still get there on time.
