Yep, you'll have to start at BOG out of pocket too...I flew down to MDE a lot and the prices have improved enough to where I don't really need/want to use points for it anymore. It's worth a look at Aeromexico.

That being said, and I'm not sure if it's still working, but I did discover a trick WAY back when this Avianca thing first kinda started. Avianca Costa Rica (aca LACSA) flights were still available via Aeroplan. They fly to both BOG & MEX from SJO. So, if the trick still works, AND if there's space available, Bob's your uncle...fly BOG-SJO-MEX, then onward on AC/UA. I'm not entirely sure WHY it worked, but I think some of the avianca stuff after the merger was a bit haywire in the aeroplan system. You can still get Avianca Brazil flights AFAIK, though that's a bit of a different situation, but last time I really looked, LACSA flights were available. If you have expertflyer as well, it's easy to do a broader search for their flights as they have their own designation in the search parameters for awards.
