Okay, back ON topic, before this thread devolves into a "he said/she said" about underseat storage...
Anyway, you know, you can (if space is available) pull your husband from Main Cabin Select into First for a pretty reasonable price, right? I'm not sure what the gate-upgrade fee is on that particular route, but on mid-cons (in my example, Seattle to Dallas), it's $110.
I think transcons like yours from LAX to BOS are $299, but they may be lower.
And frankly, I don't think you'd raise any eyebrows if you had your husband board with you and your child. Even if he stays in coach. Gate agents are typically pretty calm about letting families board together.
