Just about anywhere in Switzerland is good for hiking yurtripper and the Bernese Oberland is very popular with many visitors. As a first view of the Swiss Alps, I would say it cannot b beat. It's what everyone 'expects' to see and as in what I wrote and you quoted, one of the 'usual suspect' areas.

Our favourite place to hike is in the Davos-Klosters area of the Graubenden. This is our favourite for several reasons. First, it can't be beat for the sheer number of hikes of any duration/length/difficulty you wish to try. See here to get some idea: https://www.davos.ch/fileadmin/user_...makarte_so.pdf The top map shows you one side of the valley in which Davos lies; the middle map the area around Klosters; the third map the other side of the valley in which Davos lies. Next to the middle map you will see a list of around 100 suggested hikes.

Also note the 6 black lines which show you the cable car and funicular that can take you up the mountains. Those along with the bus and trains in the area are FREE when you stay in the area. The hotels give you a 'Guest Card' which gets you all your transportation costs at no charge. This can be very valuable when you take say a bus to a start point; a cable car up the moutain; hike across; take a cable car/funicular back down into the valley; take a bus/train back to your start point. A cable car one way up or down can be as much as 25CHF if you have to pay for it. I cannot stress too much how valuable this card can be to someone who wants to spend a week or more and hike every day. On our last 10 day visit, I would estimate the cards saved us at least 2-300 CHF.

While other areas also offer 'Guest Cards', none of them are as valuable as the Davos Kosters card as far as I have ever seen. Scroll down on this page for a complete list of what the card gets you: https://www.davos.ch/en/davos-kloste...al/guest-card/

The third reason we prefer this area is value for money. Besides the value of the Guest Card, there is a great variety of hotels available at all price points. Overall, those prices will be lower than an equivalent hotel in the Bernese Oberland area you mention, so you get better value for money overall. The Graubunden actually gets more tourists per year than the BO area but it is not as well known to foreign tourists. It gets the highest number of Swiss domestic tourists of any area in the country. What doe that perhaps indicate to you?

Our own favourite place to stay is in the little village of Wiesen which on the maps above, you will see on the far left of the third map. Yet thanks to the Guest Card providing us free transportation we can stay there and hike anywhere between there and Klosters quite easily.
