Agreed, I probably wouldn't recommend going through the hassle unless the pages are really important. For me, I'm down to 4 pages left, and I'll need to reapply for 3 visas ($600+) if I get a new passport. So I have a pretty big incentive to get my passport to last through middle of next year. I imagine it doesn't matter to most people nearly as much.
This isn't directly related to the topic, but can't you just carry your expired passport with the valid visas along with your new passport? This is normally how it is done. I currently have two (and soon to be three) visas that outlast my passport, and it's what I'll do between passport expiration and visa expiration.
