Think oversized and more robust zip bags with a valve through which air in the bag can be sucked out and thereby reducing the volume. I bought a couple of them during the move. Reduced the volume of 6 large boxes of cloths down to one.

I've never used them for air travel given the risk that TSA may want to open them during inspection (at which point they inflate and no longer fit inside the case/bag).

I don't see any problem as long as the pillow is clearly different from the one that is provided to you. And even if it's similar you can show them the other one if someone asks.
