I have to agree with gglave. Tofino is beautiful but there is plenty else to see on the eastern side of Vancouver Island without having to battle it out on Highway 4 with heaps of overseas tourists who've never driven a car before and are now piloting a full-size RV on a mountain highway. You could base yourself anywhere in the Comox Valley and have good access both to beaches and some easy but beautiful mountain hikes. Not to mention it's way cheaper and less crowded than Tofino. A day trip up to Quadra Island would be worthwhile. And if you have some free time on your way home you could always take the Sunshine Coast route to drive back - much more time-consuming but a scenic and pleasant trip.
