I've always had more issues at vending machines than other types of terminals - even in Canada where contactless vending machines are ubiquitous. (They are slowly fixing them in Canada but still have issues).
Vending machines here in Canada are very frustrating. Pretty much the only type of card that works reliably on them is Interac. With my other cards I can't even insert them if the contactless fails as it reads the contactless even when the card is dipped.
