There's a third possibility: AS has not released low-tier award seats yet, and never will.

While anything is possible, there is no assurance that AS will ever release low-tier award seats (the only type bookable with Avios) on this route for holiday-period travel.

You can certainly keep checking periodically (I would use aa.com, which will only display low-tier AS award seats), and also check SJC-KOA, if flying out of SJC works for you.
