I have reported it to my local police department.
You can argue that it's standard package theft, but there are specifics to their administration of the program that exacerbated the situation.
The issue with SPG that sets apart from standard mail theft is that :
1. SPG (or their subcontractor) failed to provide information about the shipping of the item (that they had access to). A simple 'your reward has shipped' email would have allowed me to prevent the theft. The only communication I got was that I should get expect in six weeks.
2. Previous SPG rewards were sent in first class envelopes via USPS, sidestepping the package issue entirely. This is a change from two years or so ago, the last time I redeemed points for a gift card. I would have done the office route if I knew it was coming FedEx, believe me. I send most things to my office as it is.
3. Digital gift cards and codes are a thing, and this would have prevented my problem entirely.
4. SPG's customer service is refusing to provide me with information about the order such as their order number and the item number. SPG learned the card was cashed, but the information they gave me was not sufficient for Amazon to locate the card.
I would love nothing more than for Amazon to tell my local PD what account redeemed my gift card. I don't know if they would do anything. Amazon can do nothing without #4 . The gift card was redeemed within two days. It's possible the thief regifted it, given the proximity to Christmas, but there's a good chance the thief was stupid enough to put their own address on their stolen property. This would be a coup if I'm not their only package theft victim.
