This is one area where American could learn a lesson from Alaska, which credits refunds to your "wallet". Alaska also deposits companion vouchers in your online account.
American's phone agents have done a good job handling these transactions, but it seems like a waste of AA's time and that of passengers to have to mail vouchers to Pensacola and wait for the ticketing to be finalized.
