Let me help you out here. In Asia, the process with showers and body wash is: (1) turn on shower and wet body all over; (2) turn off shower and use body wash to wash body; (3) turn on shower to wash off body wash off body.
I also prefer to use soap.
Living in Asia, I too find it odd when hotels don't provide me with toothbrush and razor. For example, Le Meridien Barcelona where I stayed last week. Had to request these items despite paying about 3x the rate I pay at better Le Meridiens in Asia. I don't actually use the toothbrush and razor. It's the toothpaste and shaving cream I'm after.
