You shouldn't use a debit card at all IMO, if there's any chance you might want to dispute a charge.

Don't use for incidentals as the hold could remain on for many days. Use a CC to guarantee incidentals. If you must, you can always pay them with the debit card at checkout.

But as several others have already commented, in general it's not a good idea to use debit.
