I have used a debit card numerous times in Australia and other than not having access to the hold amount my balance stays the same and takes no longer than a credit card to clear the hold.

From my experience the room hold is the same for one night as it would be for multiple nights, I will have to check hotel policies more closely as that amount would not work on my debit card to well on an extended stays and using a credit card would be essential.
