AA will refund (redeposit) the miles without fee and cancel the ticket as per its t&c. It will likely be quite happy if you have a saver award. Less likely to force otherwise unavailable space. That is why I would do all of this in one transaction. E.g., make certain that AA will rebook as requested before cancelling what you have. The risk of doing so otherwise is that you are without tickets for either date/
