I have had a few D1 op-up from upgraded C+ flying TPAC. I also had them when I am in Y after refusing the middle seat.
I think yours and my experiences as the sample size are too small to draw the conclusion to maximize D1 op-ups.

I prefer looking for flights with a high probability of Y oversold scenarios.
