Good point, this applies mainly to "low-cost carriers" and is also the case on Ryanair, but neither KL nor SQ have this silly policy. I believe the self-printed/mobile boarding passes from Air Asia and Ryanair clearly state that you need to visit the "Document Check Desk" before you can go to the boarding gate.
