bocastephen - getting to the Ekiben shops at 7am from the Takanawa entrance at Shinagawa with our bags before boarding the train to HND is too risky. Someone is going to wind up feeling stressed. Odds of this venture not making someone angry or irritated will be better if our luggage has been checked in. High likelihood that nobody will have had breakfast.
Depending on the ekiban selected, you can buy them the evening before at the station, they should keep overnight and might be offered at a discount closer to closing. Personally I love anything with ikura, and I love the pickled saba sushi ekiban that will keep at least 24h, but if you're not into vinegary flavors, these options may not work.
