I've done this too years ago on an extended connection in SEA. Iirc we stopped in JNU on the way down, and overnighted in SEA enroute to MIA. Bags made it to MIA

But to the OP...it does sound like the agents short changed you. The bags should have been checked thru if only a 9 hour connection.
