When driving in LA, I found that the bigger cars were better as I felt very vulnerable in a smaller car. I would always pick an SUV as I felt quite safe in those, not necessarily the biggest though. With regards to the fuel, like someone said up thread, unless you are really budget concious the fuel is so cheap in US compared to Europe that we didn’t have to worry about the extra fuel consumption.
