So you were under 14 days AP for the outbound flight and thus had to purchase a 7-day AP fare for the outbound, but was the return under or over 14 days out from when the ticket was purchased?

As UAPrmExec explained about, the fare rules specify what fares can combine with which other fares, and these two were allowed to combine with each other.
