Also not Tier 1, but definitely Tier 2 would be the Westin Monache in Mammoth, CA. Mammoth Village is awesome, and the mountain is bigger than most others in CA, and you can hop on the gondola directly across from the hotel. Also throw in typically more consistent snow than Tahoe, even though Tahoe is a much cooler destination overall.
