I definitely agree with you checking out. I would approach the management of the hotel about this, as any security issue needs to be taken seriously.

As for any remedy, a one-night refund in cash or points seems reasonable. This was the remedy received (after a battle) when my mother had a very similar issue at a hotel in Austria.

Your first action should be an e-mail to the hotel's general manager. If you get no satisfaction from this, approach the relevant chain's customer relations department (assuming this is a chain hotel).

I would have no compunction whatsoever about requesting to be compensated. Barging into a guest's bedroom at midnight is not an insignificant issue.
