Yeah, Chinese organizations love both of these tactics.

My first job in China, I and some of the other employees recieved high quality international health insurance, while the older foreigners only recieved basic Chinese social insurance. We were told to keep it secret to avoid “hurting their feelings’”.

Both of my jobs held my Foreign Expert Certificate, because losing it would be bad. My last job did not pay me my final month’s salary, and when I attempted to take legal action, the labor arbitration board would not consider the case because I did not have my FEC. Never let them hold any documents for your protection.
