Tell me how you know that on June 1 of this year, you will not be lying in a hospital bed after a car accident? When any company offers a product at a lower but 'non-refundable' price, the equation is simple. The risk is transferred to the customer. That is what allows the company to be able to offer that lower price obviously. But the risk doesn't disappear. When you write, 'firm' you are implying the risk doesn't exist. The same illogical thinking is why so many people travel without having travel insurance. They assume nothing will happen. Foolish.
Firm? It means as firm as it can be. Geez. There is risk in anything, I choose to accept that risk and it has worked very well for me, and has not cost me hundreds of extra dollars per ticket for nothing. No one is a fool for considering their personal situation and choosing the path with the most value for their needs. If your rate of change fees/cancels is less then the cost of buying the flexible tickets then why? Please feel free to tell me how to waste hard earned money though.

Not sure what travel insurance has to do with it. If anyone is interested, I do carry it.
