Qantas, where my friend works even has a dress code of what is and isn't permissible by cabin and whether you are travelling domestic or international. Staff travel can be extremely stressful when you don't know when you might get a seat onboard. She was stranded here in London for 3 days trying to get back to Australia without success and this was when Qantas had 4 747s daily coming here. She just sucked it up and bought commercial tickets with another carrier. I've moved my trips forward a few days to ensure I could get onboard, but that meant using up more precious annual leave time. Yes, it may be cheap, but it's not without its problems. However I'm pretty sure no staff member would kick up enough of fuss to warrant police coming on board. That would likely cost them their job!
Staff travel is normally only bookable 30 days or so out, so that would rule that out.
BA staff is 3 months. I'm pretty sure this would not have been a staff flyer though, even for an affiliated agency/airline. If it was they would have all their staff flying privileges revoked and if the person is employed by BA they would likely be subject to disciplinary. I've seen this enforced ruthlessly and rightfully so.
