Vietnam Airlines “standby” upgrades

I am considering a regional itinerary on Vietnam Airlines. I normally fly J, but in this case it costs a substantial premium (by Asian regional flight standards), and I am not keen on paying that kind of fare for short hops on an A320.

I have heard, however, that Vietnam Airlines offers a sort of “standby” i.e. discounted space available upgrade option. I was just wondering how one goes about requesting those upgrades. Is it at check-in? Or, is it something one waitlists for in advance?

I would be amazed if this route were premium heavy. So, I’m willing to take a gamble. I would be happy to sit up front and have J service on the ground if the price is right. Otherwise I’ll just fly Y as it’s short anyway.

I would appreciate any information or tips. Thanks!
