I disagree, and the first year fee is waived so that $95 is $0 for year one, and functions nearly as a poor mans SIlver Medallion (free bag and priority boarding). Like anything things, the companion certificate is only good if you have a use for it. Whenever I think about getting the DL Plat card I ask myself would I have had a chance to use this in the past year and the answer is always no, I didn't have a viable trip where I'd fly 2 people on the same itin on Delta metal. As always, YMMV.
This was how I was before, but having just gotten married I all of a sudden found the companion cert to be of use and ended up jumping on a 45,000/15,000MQM/$100 for $1K spend targeted offer for the DL Plat. It'll cover the AF and then some for us. If you can't use the companion cert, there is absolutely zero reason to get the plat over the gold unless that 70K miles offer comes back. Even then, the minimum spend might be pushing it.
