Pretty sure you can find a way to fit both DSLR and iPad in the shoulder cubby. The bulkhead doesn't make much difference for storage, except that the gel pillows may be above your head. Often you can dominate the bin and be sure no one is going to squish your stuff, though, regardless of row.

I certainly noticed more engine noise in row 9. Otherwise I think row 1 & 9 are similar. 1L indeed is quite quiet, with very few people passing.
