Call me confused, but I don't follow why you wanted to book your paid ticket right away. If I understand:
1. You know what the flights will be if the trip happens.
2. If company decides to send you, you want both you and husband to go.
3. If company decides not to send you, you want neither you nor husband to go.
So why not just get husband's award ticket and wait? If the trip goes ahead and company buys your ticket last-minute, fine. Otherwise, you pay the fee to cancel and reinstate miles for husband's ticket.
Is the concern that the flights chosen for your husband may be sold out, or much more expensive than other flights the same day, by the time company books you? Do you and husband have to be on the same flights as long as you get to the same destination?
Yes, that was the concern, that it will be sold out, either totally or at least the MCE seats. Any other flight I'd probably do as you said, book him an award ticket and wait. But AA has one non-stop a day from our local airport to LHR, and the route gets a ton of traffic in the summer with UK folks working here going back with out-of-school kids on holiday. And yeah, my strong preference would be to travel together.
