I think a path that hasn't been addressed is on the fly map updates and mapping provided by Google Maps or similar (i.e. Bing Maps) for in car navigation. Audi uses a version of this, but it eliminates the phone interface issue and provide a consistent up to date map with a true driver interface experience like current built in navigation systems.
I haven't driven one, but a friend showing off his Tesla seemed consistent with this and it indeed was much better than any other in-car nav system I've ever seen (the interfaces of which are universally horrible).
And I agree with your assessment of the CarPlay interface. I usually pull over within a mile of leaving the rental car lot to disable it.
