For most connections at a larger airport, connection bags go to a central location and then are sorted for their onwards flight. Connection bags are not always the last to arrive at the onwards aircraft. "Runners" from the old days are not necessarily how things work as at a smaller station, connecting bags might simply be dropped off at a gate before those destined for baggage claim are dropped (or after). All depends on the layout of the airport and the volume.
