No - I would not chance it. When last did you come through JNB? They have installed scanners at Customs - you and I know how they work in some airports - well, ditto for JNB. And then there are the ATL, DXB, AUH, DOH flights, so any delay on those will have a delay at Immigration.
I would try and check baggage through (tightly sealed of course), and try for a flight an hour later.
