I have never noticed the air-con issue, but if it was too hot I would just leave the gate area and sit on the opposite side of the walkway where there is no sunlight and simply move back when ready to board (there is just a low metal fence separating the area so it is easy to observe).
For some reason most people want to be right at the gate where they will be boarding - perhaps understandable at Changi, with gate based security, but elsewhere not so critical. Remember once at DPS, flight delayed for about 1 hr and another flight leaving at gate sharing same seating area. Gate seating was a mess, people standing, people sitting on the floor. I walked 2 gates away, less than 50m, and shared the whole gate seating area with about 7 or 8 other passengers. Peace and quiet and room to spread out.
