Questions on Switching to Mileage Plan from AAdvantage
Hello everyone,
I have been an AAdvantage guy the last few years, but considering some upcoming changes to work/personal travels, I figured it was time to consider whether it still best suited me.
Domestically, Alaskan works just fine for me, and internationally, I am well covered by their partners list. However, I had a few questions I was hoping to resolve before deciding to make the move:
1) I have noted KLM and Air France aren't partners for much longer.
A) Is American also being dropped as a full partner? I read a bit about changes to the relationship, but was unsure what more to expect.
B) Should I anticipate other impending changes? ie, losing Emirates or BA as a partner would change my calculus quite a bit.
2) I can get status matched with American. I am gold and close to Platinum. This is a two-part question.
A) Will status on Alaskan be recognized by partner airlines? For example, since I am gold on American, I am ruby with oneworld so get that "credit" when flying BA. Alaskan's website shows that American Gold corresponds to MVP and American Platinum to MVP gold status. If I status match (either at gold or after making platinum), and then book a flight on British with crediting the miles to Alaskan, would I be treated similarly to British bronze/silver (which corresponds to oneworld ruby/sapphire)?
I guess I am just trying to figure out if the main benefit here is the network of flights working for booking flights/keeping points all with Alaskan. Or is it more that I should anticipate being only treated as well on Emirates/British/whatever as my ticket itself gets me?
As an example, I have a flight to book to italy soon that I can do on BA. If sticking with Aadvantage, I'd just credit the points there and be "ruby" status even if flying coach. If I status match to Alaskan, and book my miles to that, am I just a regular guy with an economy ticket and no "status"?
3) Any particular reason to NOT switch to Alaskan from using American/OneWorld? I'd appreciate any food for thought.
Thanks!
