It's worth noting that the Avios will only expire after 36 months of no activity, and activity is essentially any earning or spending - it is quite easy to make them essentially without expiry if you use things like the eStore to keep the activity up.
There's also a usually daily 'what did you watch on television?' survey on the Rewards for Thoughts (USA) web site that generates a nice 45 Avios for me with a token amount of time and effort to complete it. So no need to even spend money right now to extend expiration time.
