At the time, I had a 26 hours stopover in HKG to Japan on one ticket, but the agent refused to check my baggage through. So when I arrived in HKG, I just popped upstairs to departure and dropped off my luggage before I headed out to the city.

Thanks for the answer. I am happy to report that it worked properly and it was totally smooth. Got my luggage at the baggage claim, went upstairs at the check in area and re checked it for a flight departing the next day without any problem.
Even got my lounge invitation and my boarding pass so I didn’t had to check in online or go through in town check in.
