Just send in the death certificate. That's the standard, government-supported way of proving that a death occurred. Delta has bigger fish to fry than keeping your mom's death certificate and will certainly throw it out, and Fortune 500s aren't known for fraudulently using a person's identity information.

In an 18 month period my primary credit company had 3 data breaches, each time requiring me to get a new card, change all my auto pays, etc. It's one of the largest banks in the US, so one might have expected it to have better security. How good is Delta's data security?
BTW it only took a single phone call to get United to close out her mileage account with them.
