The reason why I'm tempted by a layover on the east coast it's because I'd get between 20-70 tier points more compared to a direct from LHR.
This comes down to a personal choice decision. Extra layover means extra time and fatigue, but thats a call you have to make.
If you're there for the experience, I dont find the A-330 that bad since its 2-4-2 which means if two of you are travelling together, you can get that two seat pairing. A double connection allows you to the Cathay or other lounges in T3 at LHR.
The downside is that the Admirals Club at CLT is not up to snuff in comparison to the lounges at JFK or MIA. And, you'll be on a L-US A321 from CLT to LAX.
If it were me and I had some spare time, I'd want to collect the tier points, have a nice layover in LHR, take the A330, and grin and bear it as far as the CLT experience is concerned. If I were more interested in getting from A to B, Id go via JFK.
