For airport experience (AA side) JFK and MIA have CLT beat - easy. Both have premium lounges whereas CLT only has an Admirals Club at this point. Flying JFK -> LAX means getting an A321T which is bearable in the MCE part of the cabin.

I'd lean towards MXP-JFK-LAX at this point.
About $300 more via JFK or MIA than CLT.
If I choose to fly from Milan I'd have to do MXP-LHR-CLT-LAX otherwise I can fly FCO-CLT-LAX
The reason why I'm tempted by a layover on the east coast it's because I'd get between 20-70 tier points more compared to a direct from LHR.
