While a pre-paid rate does have known restrictions, IMO you are correct that in your situation the hotel should have been more understanding. In the times I've had to cancel because of a last minute airline snafu hotels have always been understanding. I like that hotel but will probably not make a reservation there again given your experience.
CJKATL do you like that Renaissance better than the South Park Renaissance? I am also a huge fan of the South Park Marriott. The downtown hotels have gotten way to expensive. I used to be able to get center city but now I can never find it below $250 a night. If I stay uptown usually stay at the Westin.
