It isn't something totally new; I ran into the problem at least 4 months ago. I think they've set up the computers so that it's hard for gate agents to check you in, though I did have one nice guy do some gymnastics to override it, so overriding is possible, though probably somewhat difficult.

Online check-in is almost a necessity these days to guard against delays in getting to the airport.
