I suspect mainly because by the time they are looking at university admission most females have already missed high school math and science requirements. Largely because the proper role models are not there for many.
Things are changing very fast since the last three years. Now many universities are aggressively admitting female students into STEM. The goal is to eventually reach 50/50.
Why? Go figure.
