If you want the skybeds, then you will need to transit through SYD or MEL. And these routes are just starting to get them. The olf Kangaroo fleet of 747-400's has been converted, and they have started on the 747-400ER's (I believe one done and one in progress being VH-OED and OEF respecively).

The 2-class 74J's still have the QF Dreamtime Seats, but they do have the upgraded IFE screens (larger than the original screens and those use in the 767-300's).

Given that my trip next Feb/march will take me form LAX to SE Asia and then to AUs and given that I want to visit SYD and BNE, I think that it is best to go to BNE first and then go down to SYD and return to LAX on the non stop ex SYD to get the SKYBEDS. From what I read the difference in comfort is enough to warrant this routing. Do you agree?
