In my last 2 TATLs, my spouse had the message in one of them, and I had it in the other one. Each time it resulted in extra screening/questioning.
There is no need to check-in any earlier though IF the OP has been selected - then it would be worth going to the gate a little earlier than normal.
BUT there could be several other reasons why you can't check in at the moment - such as your ticket revalidation not hitting the KLM system to a simple document check that your passport is valid.
Not all instances like this mean the passenger has been selected for SSSS and I think it is wrong for people to assume it is.
I've had similar messages on several EU-US-EU flights and back and none of them led to SSSS.
