On topic, I'd still leave via EWR than transit YYZ, op-up or no.
With respect to
C-GIVC - quite a regular poster and CX flyer - I think the prevalence of problems are a wee bit overstated, at least based on my experiences.
I'm perhaps a hair shy of 20 rides in 35G now in J class. The #1 issue I've experienced is broken mirrors and other issues in the bathrooms. Cabinets not flush or closing properly, toilets seats screwed up, and cracked mirrors. Maybe one or two other bathroom issues. Bathrooms are clearly a recurring theme. On the seat, in 15-20 rides I haven't had one yet where the seat itself is clearly malfunctioning. I've seen some of the faux paneling peeling off, and I struggled to close (but eventually succeeded after smashing it) an arm rest/aisle guard a few times due to what seems like poor design. These issues obviously aren't a good look at all for CX's image, but I also haven't experienced a mission critical problem if you are trying to sleep, work or get comfy.
I've also read a few reports on here where WiFi is broken during the flight, although I haven't experienced this problem yet.
For example, I've had 4 rides on 35G in the last two weeks. On all 4 seats my J seats were 100% no problems, bathrooms were 100% normal (not even cracked mirrors with duct tape. miracle!), WiFi worked without issues. Very comfortable ride.
